Open Communities

Open Communities knows that where a person lives determines everything; access to high performing schools, jobs, health, transportation, recreation and green space. To that end, all communities, especially communities rich in resources and opportunities should be accessible for all people. Open Communities is the only housing agency in the northern suburbs certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as qualified to help those threatened with the possibility of losing their home. Our services are free to clients and include Housing Counseling and Education and Fair Housing Testing and Enforcement.

The Fair Housing and Enforcement program is a Housing and Urban Development-designated private enforcer of fair housing laws. When clients experience discrimination in the housing market, they can turn to Open Communities for guidance.

The Housing Counseling and Education is the only program in the northern suburbs certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as qualified to help those threatened with the possibility of losing their home. We work with homeowners and lenders to secure mortgage modifications, we also focus on helping low to moderate-income families achieve homeownership, maintain homeownership, rental counseling, foreclosure prevention, pre and post-purchase counseling, and financial literacy.
