Handicap Accessible Shuttle Bus Driver
Maine Township is seeking a reliable, safety-focused Handicap Accessible Shuttle Bus Driver to transport passengers—primarily seniors and individuals with disabilities—from their homes to appointments, stores, senior programs, and other destinations. This role involves assisting passengers with boarding and exiting a 7-passenger, lift-equipped PACE bus. This is a part-time position, up to 19 hours per week, Monday–Friday, with varying hours.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Attend and successfully complete PACE training; follow all PACE procedures and guidelines.
- Track rides, maintain logs, and complete required reports.
- Follow vehicle maintenance procedures, including taking the vehicle in for service; ensure the bus is fueled and in safe working condition daily.
- Safely transport elderly and/or disabled individuals to and from assigned destinations while providing respectful, friendly customer service.
- Assist passengers with boarding, secure mobility devices as needed, and ensure comfort and safety throughout the ride.
- Answer calls and schedule pick-ups.
- Adhere to all traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Notify appropriate contacts if a passenger may require police, medical, or other emergency services.
- Promptly report any mechanical issues with the bus.
- Complete daily trip sheets and accident/incident reports when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Strong work history with at least 5 years of safe driving experience.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email and entering data into Excel.
- Flexibility to work occasional additional hours, if needed.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Punctual, dependable, and customer-service oriented.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to safely push, pull, and maneuver individuals in wheelchairs.
- Able to operate a heavy motor vehicle and follow geographic/directional instructions.
- Must pass a background check and drug test; subject to random drug testing.
- Enjoys working with the public and demonstrates a friendly, patient, and service-oriented approach when assisting passengers.
- Prior experience driving a bus, shuttle bus, or other commercial vehicle desirable
- Proficiency with Google Maps or similar driving/navigation apps.
- Ability to use email and input information into Excel spreadsheets.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License required.
- Frequent lifting/carrying of 35–50 lb. objects.
- Regular stooping, bending, reaching, and handling tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Must have adequate vision, hearing, and color vision to safely operate the vehicle and assist passengers.
- Job Type: Part-Time, up to 19 hours/week
