Maine Township Food Pantry Distributes 60,000 Lbs of Food in FY 24

In October of 2023, the Maine Township Food Pantry and the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), entered into a partnership which established the pantry as a 501(c)(3) Foundation.

As a Food Access Partner, the Township receives an annual funding report from the GCFD detailing the sourcing and funding of the food distributed through Maine Township.

In FY 2024 the Pantry distributed over $88,000 worth of food which equates to over 60,000 pounds of food to local residents. Of the total dollar amount, $38,000 came from federal funds, $28,000 from donated food, and nearly $22,000 in purchased food from the GCFD.

“This partnership has truly been a huge benefit to our pantry’s clients,” Food Pantry Director Nick Kanehl said. “We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to serve Maine Township residents,” Kanehl said.

The GCFD receives monetary donations from corporations and individuals, accepts food from restaurants and other sources, and purchases food in bulk through federal government programs. Volunteers at the GCFD warehouse help prepare large quantities of food for distribution by inspecting, sorting, repacking and labeling food before the GCFD’s fleet of climate-controlled vehicles distributes food safely to food pantries and programs throughout Cook County.
