Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Maine Township residents are part of a network of residents, businesses, schools, and local government that depend more and more on digital tools—from paying bills online to accessing school portals, from municipal services to remote work. Cybersecurity isn’t just a tech issue; it’s a community issue.
Each October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month serves as a reminder that protecting ourselves online is within reach. The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) leads this initiative and encourages simple, effective habits that individuals and organizations can adopt.
This year’s theme is “Stay Safe Online”, focusing on the Core 4 actions everyone can take to improve digital safety.
1. Use Strong Passwords + a Password Manager
Why it matters: Weak or reused passwords remain one of the easiest ways for cybercriminals to get in. A strong, unique password for each account drastically reduces risk.
2. Turn On Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
Why it matters: Even if a password is compromised, MFA adds a second barrier (e.g. a code, push notification, biometric). This often stops attackers from gaining access.
3. Recognize and Report Scams
Why it matters: Phishing, vishing, and other social engineering scams are among the most common routes attackers take. Recognizing them early can prevent serious consequences.
4. Update Your Software
Why it matters: Many cyberattacks exploit known vulnerabilities in outdated software. Keeping systems patched and updated blocks many attack vectors.
In adopting these 4 core principles in your daily life, you and your families can stay safe online and protect yourself from un-wanted cyber targeting.
