Cut Your Electric Bill by 20% — Free Sign-Up Days at Town Hall This August

On Thursday, August 13 and Thursday, August 27, the Township is hosting free Electricity Savings Sign-Up Days at Town Hall. Residents who qualify can enroll on the spot in an Illinois community solar program that lowers electric supply costs by roughly 20 percent every month.

No panels. No installation. No contractor at your door. You keep ComEd exactly as you have it today.

What is community solar, exactly?

A solar farm somewhere in Illinois generates electricity and sends it into the same grid that already powers your home. Your utility account gets linked to a share of that farm, and every month the energy your share produces shows up as a credit on your ComEd bill.

You are not buying equipment. You are not signing up for construction. You are subscribing to a slice of a solar farm that already exists — and the credit it earns comes straight off what you owe.

Important FAQ’s

“Do I have to switch away from ComEd?” No. ComEd stays your utility, your service does not change, and if the power goes out you call the same number you always have.

“Is there a catch or a fee?” No. Enrollment is free, and you can cancel at any time.

“Will someone need to come to my house?” No. Nothing is installed at your property. Everything happens at the sign-up table.

How to know if you qualify?

The program is designed for income-eligible households. If you already receive any of the benefits below, you are almost certainly eligible:

  • Medicaid
  • SNAP / EBT (food stamps)
  • Section 8 housing voucher
  • LIHEAP (energy assistance)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Lifeline USAC

What to bring with you

Two items:

  • A current ComEd bill
  • One document showing you receive one of the benefits above (a Medicaid letter, SNAP/EBT card or letter, Section 8 voucher or letter, LIHEAP acceptance letter or email, SSI documentation, or Lifeline USAC paperwork)

Bring paper copies if you have them. Representatives from Buy Commercial Energy will be at Town Hall both days to sit down with you, review your bill, and complete the enrollment while you wait. Most residents are done in under fifteen minutes.

Why the Township is doing this

Utility costs are one of the most common pressures we hear about from residents at the General Assistance counter. Energy assistance has long been part of what Maine Township does — helping neighbors apply for LIHEAP, navigate benefit programs, and stay current on essential bills.

Community solar adds something those programs cannot: an ongoing monthly reduction rather than a one-time payment. For a household on a fixed income, twenty percent off the supply portion of the electric bill, month after month, adds up.
